The story behind us

Silver Raindrop opened in October 2017 with a single clothing rail, a folding table, and twelve pieces Bethan Mercer had spent the previous year sourcing from small studios across the UK and Ireland. The name came from a line in a letter…

About

A bit more

The shop is still small. That is not an accident. There is a version of Silver Raindrop that could have expanded, taken on more stock, moved to a bigger space. Bethan chose not to, and the choice gets easier every year. The customers who come regularly are not looking for volume. They want to know what something is made of, how it will age, whether the person who made it was paid fairly. Those are the questions the shop was built to answer. The journal on this site is where Bethan writes about the things that inform the buying: fabric, craft, repair, the longer life of objects.

Nothing came in unless I could write the provenance note from memory.

How to get the most from a beeswax pillar candle

Beeswax pillar candles are denser than paraffin or soy candles, which means they burn more slowly and at a higher temperature. They also behave differently in the first few burns, and getting those right makes a significant difference to how the candle performs over its full life.

Founder

"Bethan Mercer spent eight years buying for a mid-size department store before leaving in autumn 2016 to start something smaller and more deliberate. She trained in textile history at Cardiff University, then worked as an assistant buyer at a regional chain in South Wales before moving into womenswear curation. The idea for Silver Raindrop came from a frustration she could not shake: beautiful things kept getting buried under volume. She opened the boutique in 2017 with a single rail of twelve pieces and a handwritten price list. She still writes every product note herself. Outside the shop she keeps a kitchen garden and has a long-standing habit of reading seed catalogues in January."
